Altar to the Luck o' the Irish

Altar to the Luck o' the Irish

You've probably heard the term "the luck of the Irish", but did you know it's not Irish in origin? It had to do with the gold and silver rushes of the late 19th century. A number of the luckiest miners to find the riches were Irish or Irish-American. Over time the success of the Irish miners to find gold and silver led to the expression. It was also usually said with "a hint of mockery", meaning they would never have found the precious metals if it wasn't for sheer luck.

So how can we bring a bit of the Irish Luck to ourselves? With an altar of course! There are many deities that are associated with luck or good fortune. I'll leave it up to you on who you choose to give thanks to, but I'll list a few here to help you get started in researching them.

If you follow the Feng Shui principles of determining a good location for an altar, this should be the far left corner of your home, as you enter the home. Your home office will work as well. You will need items associated with luck and abundance. Choose a center piece for your altar, like a statue of Buddha or a money tree. You can find a money tree (Pachira Aquatica) online or at a specialty florist. These trees are legendary for inspiring prosperity and resources.

Next we're going to add a candle. Depending on how long you wish for the candle to last, will determine the size you should get. If you plan to burn it for a couple hours every day, get a large candle. If your looking for one short session a smaller candle will work. Make sure you get a green candle, preferably one that the color goes all the way through the candle and isn't just the outer most layer.

We're going to get some crystals for our altar, and we're looking for anything green as it is associated with money. A hunk of pyrite or "Fool's Gold" would work  well since it promotes success which leads to prosperity. Aventurine is a great choice as well. It helps bring in love, luck and wealth and is a great multipurpose crystal for your altar.

Another element to consider is herbs. Chamomile is great for enhancing positive energy and is thought to transform negative energy into positive energy. Cinnamon is also another great choice as it blocks negative energy and attracts abundance and wealth. A small amount of patchouli will also help with releasing any negative emotions and the cultivation of good emotions.

Finally we can add a mason jar. Any size will do. We're going to write out different positive affirmations to add to the jar. Some examples are "I am a money magnet" or "money flows to me easily". You can add them all at once, or stop by each day and add a new affirmation. There is no right or wrong here.

Blessed Be. JC
